How do the artists showcased in this exhibition integrate environmental responsibility into their art practices centered on ecology? How can concerns regarding sustainability and ecological issues be effectively incorporated into both the theoretical and practical dimensions of art? Furthermore, the discussion will delve into contemporary art's approaches to nature and ecology, with a primary focus on the works spanning various disciplines. These artists convey direct messages concerning environmental issues or provoke contemplation on sustainability through their creative endeavors.

Die Trauer der Natur und Menschheit

Wie gehen die KünstlerInnen dieser Ausstellung mit Umweltverantwortung in ihren auf Ökologie basierenden Kunstpraktiken um? Wie können Bedenken hinsichtlich Nachhaltigkeit und ökologischer Probleme in den theoretischen und praktischen Aspekten der Kunst adressiert werden? Darüber hinaus werden Ansätze zur Natur und Ökologie in der zeitgenössischen Kunst diskutiert und sich hauptsächlich auf die Werke von den ausgestellen KünstlerInnen konzentrieren, die Werke in verschiedenen Disziplinen produzieren, die eine direkte Botschaft über Umweltprobleme vermitteln und uns einladen, über Nachhaltigkeit nachzudenken.

Das Projekt "Atomare Myzelien" setzt sich künstlerisch mit den dauerhaften ökologischen Folgen der Katastrophe von Tschernobyl auseinander, mit einem speziellen Blick auf die Radioaktivität in Wildpilzen, die bis heute in den Wäldern Osteuropas, Deutschlands, Österreichs, Italiens und Skandinaviens vorkommen. In der Ausstellung in der Galerie wird dieses Thema künstlerisch reflektiert, präsentiert durch biografische und wissenschaftliche Texte, Bilder sowie selbstgenähte Overalls, die von nuklearer Schutzkleidung inspiriert und mit Pilzmotiven versehen sind. Am 11. April 2024 laden die KünstlerInnen ein, im Rahmen einer Siebdruckwerkstatt eigene Kleidungsstücke mit atomaren Myzel-Motiven zu bedrucken und sich physisch mit dem Thema zu verbinden.

Das Projekt wird umgesetzt von Maryna Markova (Bildende Künstlerin) und Dr.´in Olesya Chayka (Molekularbiologin und Umweltchemikerin)

Maryna Markova, geboren in der Ukraine, ist Künstlerin, Kunstvermittlerin und Pädagogin. In ihrer künstlerischen Arbeit untersucht sie Phänomene des Erinnerns, Vergessens und der Fremdheit und erforscht Orte als Träger der Erinnerung. Sie arbeitet mit Medien wie Malerei, Zeichnung, poetischen Texten, Fotografie, Installationen und Performance, um ästhetische Erlebnisse mit biografischer Forschung und persönlichen Geschichten zu verbinden.

Dr.´ in Olesya Chayka ist Umweltchemikerin und promovierte Molekularbiologin. Ihr Interesse liegt im Bereich der mikrobiellen Gemeinschaften und dem Unsichtbaren von symbiotischen Beziehungen. In Russland geboren, studierte, lebte und arbeitete sie u.a. in Großbritannien, Italien und Deutschland, wo sie in vielen Forschungsprojekten und Laboren mitgewirkt hat. 2016 startete sie ihr eigenes Projekt “BubbleScience”. Dabei werden Kinder an die Welt der Wissenschaft herangeführt. Die Workshops kombinieren Kunst, spielerische Methoden und wissenschaftliche Experimente.

2018 gründeten Maryna und Olesya den Verein Koopkultur e.V., eine Initiative, die Künstler*innen, Wissenschaftler*innen und Pädagog*innen zusammenbringt, um ko-kreativ diverse Bildungsformate und künstlerische Projekte zu gestalten.

The project "Atomic Mycelium" artistically addresses the long-term ecological impacts of the Chernobyl disaster, with a particular focus on the radioactivity in wild mushrooms still found in the forests of Eastern Europe, Germany, Austria, Italy, and Scandinavia today. By combining research and art, realized in a T-shirt collection, it illustrates the invisible radioactive contamination of nature and creates a physical connection to the subject. The gallery exhibition not only offers an artistic reflection on the topic and showcases the T-shirt collection but also includes an interactive element: a screen printing workshop where visitors have the opportunity to create their own T-shirts with designs of atomic mycelium.

The project is implemented by Maryna Markova (Visual Artist) and Dr. Olesya Chayka (Molecular Biologist and Environmental Chemist).

"Waters of Mesopotamia"

Panel discussion with Rojda Tuğrul and Ahmet Zirek

The panel focuses on the transformation that has occurred in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in the last decade due to political and social reasons. “What was the ecological management model of local governments and what was being done for ecological municipalism, especially in the cities of Diyarbakir and Mardin in Kurdistan.”

Rojda Tugrul is an interdisciplinary artist and researcher based in Vienna, whose practice focuses on the notion of identity in relation to space and time. Her doctoral dissertation sought to analyse the effects of war on ecological and cultural heritage within the socio-political framework of Kurdish territories. Whilst examining the spatial transformation and deterioration of the habitat as a trace of change in the culture and collective psyche of society, her work also explored the politics of art, the autonomy of artistic representations, and the power of images. Rojda holds an MSc in Veterinary Studies and she graduated from the PhD-in-Practice Program in the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.

Ahmet Zirek was born in 1961 in Mazıdağı district of Mardin. I graduated from Anadolu University Faculty of Economics in 1987. I completed Pedagogical Formation Training at Diyarbakır Dicle University Faculty of Education in 1987-1988. He started working as a civil servant in Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality in 1984. He worked in many units of the municipality. He served as the General Secretary of Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality between 1999-2006 and as the General Secretary of GABB (Union of Southeastern Anatolian Municipalities), which was formed by our regional municipalities, between 2006-2009. He was among the founders of the Local Governments Academy within GABB, with the aim of building a Democratic, Ecological and Gender-Liberal local government model. He gave training as a local government expert at the Academy established between 2007-2009. He has been living in Vienna for 7 years.
